Garuda is the result of a joint venture between the Government of Indonesia with the Dutch airline Luchtvaart Koninklijke Maatschappij (KLM). At first, the Government of Indonesia owns 51% shares and during the first 10 years, the company is managed by KLM. Because of nationalist coercion, KLM sell part of its stake in 1954 to the Indonesian government.
